Panda worker returns €1,500 found in recycling skip

Panda have noticed an unusual trend in recent months with senior citizens accidentally throwing cash into skips. This week Romanian national Costica Nedelcu was working at Panda's recycling centre and found €1,500 hidden in an old shoe. After reporting this find to his manager; Panda managed to track down the rightful owner and return the cash.

The money belonged to a women with Alzheimer's who had hidden cash around her home for safekeeping. When her daughter arranged for a Panda skip to clean out her mother's home she unwittingly threw out the old pair of shoes which her mother had used as a hiding place for her cash.

The woman's daughter who asked not to be named said "I had no idea that we had thrown out my mother's money until Panda contacted me. It’s a big relief and pleasant surprise to get my mother's money back. I'm very appreciative of Panda's honesty and professionalism in returning the cash."

A common occurrence associated with Alzheimer's is for hidden cash around peoples homes to be forgotten about. Eamon Timmins of Age Action says "When discarding of possessions on behalf of older people, we advise carers to be aware that valuables can be hidden in unexpected places so furniture or other unwanted items should be double checked before being placed into skips."

Brian McCabe CEO of Panda says "We were very happy that we could return lost money to our customer. We will continue to be vigilant and will make every effort to ensure that cash accidentally thrown into skips or bins is returned to its rightful owner."
