Recycling beverage cartons in Ireland has taken another step in the right direction! That’s due to our recent partnership with Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE Ireland).
Under this collaboration, ACE Ireland has funded the installation of robotic sorting technology at our material recovery facility (MRF) in Ballymount, Dublin. This cutting-edge technology is capable of accurately scanning, detecting, and picking materials across 28 classes, including beverage cartons.
The robot has the capacity to deliver 33,000 picks over a ten-hour shift, allowing the materials to be sorted into dedicated streams that can be sent onwards to ACE’s specialized carton recycling facility in the UK.
This is an important development that will help ensure more beverage cartons are recycled in Ireland. Panda takes in c.90,000 tonnes of mixed dry recyclable materials to our Ballymount facility per annum from over 400,000 homes, and the robot can help sort up to 500 tonnes of cartons for onward recycling each year.
The key to making this process work is for Ireland’s consumers to place their tetra pak cartons into the recycling bin – clean, dry, and loose – along with any other recyclable materials. Check out our Recycling Poster for the full list.
