Our bin trucks are fitted with low-resolution cameras that take a quick snap of the waste as it's collected. These images help our team spot anything that might’ve ended up in the wrong bin. If we see something out of place, you’ll get a handy email from the "Your Bin" team. It’ll include the image, a quick explanation, and a few tips to help you sort it properly next time. The images are low-quality and only used to give you a nudge in the right direction.
Panda has implemented a smart system to improve waste collection and educate customers on proper recycling practices. Here’s how the process works from start to finish:
-
Bin Collection: The Panda truck collects the bins along its designated route.
-
Image Capture: The onboard camera system captures images of the waste after each bin is tipped into the truck.
-
Image Upload: Once the Panda truck arrives at the depot after completing its route, the images are transferred to Panda’s internal CRM system for review.
-
Dedicated Team: We have a dedicated team that reviews the images to spot anything that’s been misplaced. This helps us keep the information clear and make sure the right materials are going in the right bins.
All images and data are fully anonymised, so there’s no way to link them back to any individual. Everything is handled in line with data protection regulations—your privacy is always respected.
-
“Your Bin” Customer Communications: Panda’s internal CRM system generates a PDF letter that includes an image, description, and instructions to educate our customers on how to place items correctly in the future.
This end-to-end process ensures greater accountability and supports customers in making more informed, environmentally responsible choices.
We understand that the use of technology in waste collection can raise questions around data protection and information security. That’s why we want to be transparent and provide reassurance on how we handle this responsibly:
-
Information security is our top priority. The images taken are deliberately low resolution so no personally identifiable information can be seen.
-
Low-resolution images. The cameras used are deliberately low-res to avoid capturing unnecessary or sensitive details.
- Education: The imaging service and customer communications are here to help households recycle better.
- Secure Disposal: We always recommend disposing of sensitive documents securely. You can tear or shred documents and place the materials into a clear plastic bag, or redact personal information before placing them in your bin.
We are committed to protecting your privacy while using technology to support a cleaner, greener future for everyone.
The Cleaner Bin Imaging Service is currently being rolled out in the Dublin area, across all three household bins; general, recycling and compost. We plan to expand this service to all our customers in the near future, as further improvements in waste segregation must be made.
This phased approach allows us to focus where the impact is the greatest, while ensuring the service is accurate, effective, and respectful of our customers.
Why did I receive a “Your Bin” message from Panda?
Receiving a “Your Bin” communication simply means that some items in your bin didn’t meet the guidelines for proper sorting. Our goal is to help you improve how waste is separated, so we can all reduce contamination and support better recycling.
The message includes a photo of the issue along with helpful tips on what went wrong and how to sort similar items correctly in the future.
How do you know that was from my bin?
Our bin collection vehicles are equipped with low-resolution cameras that capture images of waste materials during the collection process. These images are reviewed by our dedicated team. During the review, any misplaced materials are highlighted. An educational follow-up email is sent from the “Your Bin” team to the customer with the image, instructions, and guidance on how to improve sorting in the future. Remember, our cameras will be taking low resolution images. If there are no misplaced items, you won’t hear from us!
What exactly do you mean by ‘contaminated’ or ‘misplaced’ materials?
Good waste sorting is key to recycling properly, and sometimes mistakes can happen.
Here’s what we mean:
- Contaminated materials are items that don’t meet the right condition, for example, dirty, wet, or bagged materials that should be clean, dry, and loose.
- Misplaced materials are simply items that were put in the wrong bin.
Here are some common examples:
- Recycling bin mistakes: Nappies, food waste, ceramics, glass, or electronics.
- Compost bin mistakes: Plastics, metal, or anything non-organic.
- General waste bin mistakes: Food waste, cardboard, garden waste, or items that could be composted or recycled.
What happens if I keep contaminating my bin?
If further contamination or sorting issues are found, we’ll continue to send helpful “Your Bin” messages. Each one will show what was found and give tips on how to sort better next time. These messages are designed to support you in improving your bin use and helping the overall recycling process.
Contaminated recycling can result in large batches being rejected, so even the smallest of improvements can make a big difference!
Where do the images go after being taken?
Once the Panda truck arrives at the depot after completing its route, the images are transferred to Panda’s internal CRM system for digital review. All data stays within our ICT system and is not shared with third parties. The images are then securely reviewed by our dedicated team to identify any incorrect materials. If such materials are detected, this acts as an alert that incorrect items have been found in one of your bins.
I’m not sure the image is from my bin — what can I do?
If you think there’s been a mistake or you’d like to ask for more details, you can get in touch with us. We’ll review your concern and make sure you get a response.
How will I receive the message?
If we have your email address, you’ll receive the message directly to your inbox. You can view it on your phone, tablet, or computer and even zoom on the image if needed. If no active email address is on file, we’ll send the letter by post instead.
Who looks at the images?
A dedicated team is responsible for reviewing the images and identifying any misplaced materials. This process ensures the accuracy and integrity of the data collected. All images and related information are handled using anonymised data to protect individual privacy and comply with data protection regulations.
