A New Way to Recycle Your Christmas Tree: Leading the Way with Project reTREE

Blog
19th Dec 2025

As Ireland’s leading recycling and waste management provider, we’re here to make rubbish disposal easy and environmentally sound. And this year, there’s big news for anyone saying goodbye to their artificial tree.

Dublin has become the first city in the world to introduce a dedicated recycling scheme for artificial Christmas trees — Project reTREE, which we are proud to be part of.

Artificial Trees Disposal

For the first time, any household in Dublin can bring their artificial Christmas trees to our Ballymount Recycling Centre free of charge. Artificial trees of any brand, size or age will be accepted, with or without lights.

Here’s how it works:

  • Location: Ballymount Recycling Centre, Dublin 20
  • What’s accepted: All artificial and natural trees, any brand, including pre-lit trees
  • Cost: Free of charge

Unlike natural trees, artificial trees contain a mix of plastics, metals and fittings that are difficult to separate. Project reTREE aims to tackle this problem head-on and has created a recycling solution that keeps valuable materials in use for longer.

As Councillor Jim Gildea added at the launch:

“Working with local stakeholders, Balsam Hill will ship these trees to France to be shredded for recycling and continue exploring the best way to make new artificial trees from old ones. This pilot supports our vision for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown to become a circular county.”

Please check each drop-off location for the most current opening hours, especially around seasonal periods. Visiting during non-peak times can also help make your trip smoother and quicker.
