Smart Meters

The digits displayed on your new smart meter are your reading. If it seems lower than normal, that’s because when your smart meter was installed it started at 0. Over the next few months (as more smart meters are installed) your meter readings will start to be sent to ESB remotely over the 2G network.

All data collected from the meter will be securely stored in a central Meter Data Management System (MDMS) operated by ESB Networks. ESB Networks is committed to being fully compliant with GDPR and to ensuring that all personal customer data is safe and secure.

Your smart meter will record details of your consumption of electricity. Each day, ESB Networks will collect data on the total amount of electricity consumed over the previous 24-hour period. This data will be used to provide information to support customer billing, customers switching suppliers and customers moving premises.

Your meter will also collect a more detailed breakdown of electricity consumed, for example, usage every 30 minutes. This information will only be shared with Panda if you have given your consent, and will help us develop new services that make effective use of this data. To make sure the meter is working properly, ESB Networks will also collect non-personal data about the meter itself.

Health authorities around the world, including the World Health Organization, have assessed the scientific evidence and conclude that there are no established health effects from smart meters (which use similar technology to that used in your mobile phone). Your smart meter will be installed by ESB Networks, who are required to comply with all necessary requirements and international standards.

There is no charge to have a smart meter installed. Like other meter upgrades, the cost of the meter will be recouped over time through standard charges.

Below are the steps involved in replacing your meter:

  1. You will receive a letter a few weeks in advance of your meter replacement. If your electricity meter is outdoors and easily accessible you don’t need to be home for the meter replacement work to be conducted. If your meter is located inside ESB Networks will arrange an appointment with you.
  2. An ESB Networks technician or an electrical contractor working on their behalf will come to your property to remove your existing meter and replace it with the new smart meter. 
  3. To do the work safely your electricity supply will be turned off for approximately 45 minutes.
  4. ESB Networks will undertake a safety assessment of the meter installation and, where necessary, may carry out additional remedial works at no cost to you.

Whilst initial focus will be on the oldest meters that are due for replacement, you can apply through Panda or ESB Networks for prioritised installation.

The replacement programme began in autumn 2019 and will continue until the end of 2024. To date, work has started in parts of Dublin, Cork, Laois, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow. The roll out will continue on a phased area by area basis, for which a detailed plan is currently in development. Please refer to the ESB Networks webpage for more details.

ESB Networks will replace 250,000 meters between autumn 2019 and the end of 2020, and a further 500,000 meters every year from 2021 to 2024.

The replacement work will be carried out by either an ESB Networks network technician or an electrical contractor working on their behalf. All installers carry photo ID badges identifying them.

Currently, your electricity meter is manually read by ESB Networks up to four times per year. When smart meters are fully operational, you will get more accurate information about energy usage throughout the day. This will help you make more informed choices about your consumption and tariffs, shift consumption to off-peak times (when energy is cheaper), and manage your bills with greater accuracy. Smart meters are also able to automatically send your meter readings to ESB Networks.

Smart meters also benefit the environment by encouraging energy efficiency and supporting an increase in renewable power. The upgrade programme will help cut CO2 emissions and lower Ireland’s costly reliance on fossil fuel imports.

The economy will also benefit because smart meters help manage energy flow at times of high demand. They will also enhance competition and improve consumer experience, customer choice, and the range of products and services available.

Smart meters are the next generation of electricity meters. Using digital technology, they give you and Panda accurate information on energy usage throughout the day.
